I think the requlator IC LM78xx has current limit of 1A to 1.5A.

To make sure its ok, a “Choke Inductor” is in series to the power supply before going the voltage regulator, 7812 does NOT have short circuit and current limiting characteristics( Especially when you are using a 12v Automotive battery). And be sure that you included a fuse when using an automotive battery as power supply. When a short circuit was occurred, the current will go up to 200AMPERES!!, so better think about it.
